President's Message (November 4, 2013)
ISPCOP held its second annual Symposium during the ASA annual meeting in San Francisco on October 14th. Participants were treated to lectures from an expert international panel on such diverse topics as ventilatory strategies, airway management, drug dosing, and labor analgesia, all areas of particular interest to those caring for the morbidly obese patient. Our inaugural research prize was awarded to Dr. Lawrence Frank of Cleveland Clinic Florida, for his abstract describing residual neuromuscular blockade in obese patients. CME credits were available to attendees as well, as a benefit of society membership.
ISPCOP members were prominently represented at several additional meetings over the past year, including the ASA, World Congress, and IFSO. Plans are underway for an obesity “track” at the 2016 World Congress in Hong Kong, jointly sponsored by ISPCOP, ESPCOP, SOBA and SASM, an exciting opportunity for all four societies. We also intend to have a notable presence at Obesity Week 2014 and ESA 2015. Our regular column in the Bariatric Times continues to be a wonderful opportunity for members to disseminate their knowledge to a wider audience, and these columns as well as other member publications are readily available for viewing on the website.
Please consider becoming an active member in ISPCOP. Write an article for Bariatric Times, propose a panel for the ASA, recruit new members. There are plans underway to create practice advisory work groups as a way of putting our collective expertise to good use. We will be seeking able-minded volunteers to research and write. Finally, we are looking forward to incorporating a research symposium into our annual meeting next year – watch for the call for abstracts and submit yours!
